Poem in Your Pocket Day
Name:
Poem in Your Pocket Day
Date:
April 26, 2018
Event Description:
Visit any NOLS location on Thursday, April 26, to take part in Poem in Your Pocket Day, part of National Poetry Month. Celebrate by picking up a poem, carrying it throughout the day, and sharing it with someone else—family, coworkers, or new friends you haven’t met yet. Author, poet, and National Book Award winner Mark Doty said, “A poem has no value, cannot be possessed. You can memorize it, give it away, sing it, email it to everybody you know. Is it yours or anyone’s? It can only have been made by the one who made it, but you make it your own as you take it in.” US Poet Laureate Tracy K Smith has said, “Poetry surprises and deepens our sense of the ordinary. Poetry tells us that the world is full of wonder, revelation, consolation, and meaning.” For more poets, poems, and poetry, take advantage of NOLS’ other poetry programming and displays. Throughout April, look for Poetry Walks on several Olympic National Park trails. Visit the Port Angeles Main Library April 16-30 for a display of diverse poetry materials, or visit your local branch to browse material selections available.
